Foundation of the Servants of Mary
(1233).
The Order of the Servants of Mary (OSM) whose members are known as Servites, was founded in 1233. In that year, seven merchants in the city of Florence in Italy left their families and businesses to form a religious community.
They were known for their devotion to the Virgin Mary, hence the name of their order. A monastery was established at Monte Senario
Blessed Virgin Mary of Dolours - Servite Patron
I. Servite Friars live in a COMMUNITY gathered together in the Name of the Lord Jesus, in the service of God and his people inspired by Mary, mother and servant of the Lord.
II. Servite Friars live a FRATERNAL life embracing all differences of nationality, race, religion, wealth and education.
III. Servite Friars devote their attention to the SERVICE of the poor, the suffering and the needy in our society, by the constant inspiration of our Lady of Sorrows, the mother of all humanity and the Patron of the ORDER OF THE SERVANTS OF MARY.
The primary way this identity becomes rooted in the Church and in the world today is by sharing our varied experiences of faith and our educational, economic, social and cultural backgrounds together as one Servite family.
